Penetrant testing is used for easy detection of defects on almost all metallic and non-metallic material surfaces (steel, plastic, aluminium, brass …). As a prerequisite for the applicability of the method the defect to be detected needs to be open to the workpiece surface; internal material defects will not be detected. This method is particularly well known due to its use in the aviation industry and in the series testing of aluminium components in the automotive industry.
